I am trying to study for the GRE and I can’t muster the will power to actually go through the math section of the practice book. I took the practice test and it turned out terrible. I got 2 out of 10 questions right. The test said it was “elementary” math; let me just say, NO WAY IN THIS LIFE. (If you can’t tell I wanted to type something different). What is the purpose of a university still backing the GRE. If someone has already completed their undergraduate degree why not let them be considered acceptable to complete graduate work? Furthermore; In my case I am applying to graduate school at North Texas were in fact I got my bachelor’s; so, why are they discrediting their own institution by asking me to take a test to see what I learned at UNT. They already awarded me a degree and a 3.4 GPA? Why give someone a grade on their test first and the test second. The whole system is backwards. It seems to me that if anything the GRE should be mandatory to graduate from undergraduate school.
One last note, I downloaded applications for the University of Michigan, Columbia University, and Rutgers University and none of them require the GRE. I love UNT but they do not have the same reputation as the aforementioned institutions and if they are happy with my undergraduate degree then UNT needs to get on the bus.

John,
I am totally with you on this. I am kinda struggling with the same issues. I want to work on a master's, but I do not want to take the GRE. Just remember one thing, the state prevents universities from using the GRE as a defininig factor to base admissions to graduate programs. :)
